The Lao Jia ("old" or "big" frame ) style of Chen family Taijiquan is believed to have been created by Chen Changxin from several preexisting boxing routines credited to Chen Wang Ting.

The movements of the Lao Jia style are larger than in other styles of Chen Family Taijiquan. They may also be said to be less complex. The posture feature a pronounced rotation of the waist and a "settling" into the final position of each movement before proceeding to the next.

In the Lao Jia style, it is said that the mechanics of Chan Si Gong are less externally apparent than in other styles. Lao Jia is considered to be the foundation of Taijiquan training in the Chenjiagou curriculum, and must be mastered before other forms, such as Xin jia can be learned.

The Lao Jia system contains two barehand solo routines: Yi lu ("first road") and Erlu ("second road"), as well as many weapons forms, pushing hands techniques, and auxiliary training exercises.

The Yi Lu form The Yi lu form consists of 74-76 postures, varying from teacher to teacher. The movements are predominantly "soft": that is to say the use of the technique of fa jing ("expressing energy") is found in less than twenty five percent of the routine. It is said that in the Yi lu form, the hands follow the motion of the body.
