Chen Style Taijiquan The Source of Taiji Boxing

by Davidine Siaw-Voon Sim and David Gaffney

This book is a must read for all practitioners of Chen Style Taijiquan.

It's the first comprehensive look at the art in the english language. Unlike most books on Taiji, It doesn't attempt to teach or depict any techniques, or forms.

It explains concepts clearly and understandibly. It is well written.

The book outlines the development of the art, and it's theoretical basis, and how these are expressed in the physical movements of the style. It then outlines the postural requirements of the art, and the fundamental physical concepts that are found in the movements. The levels of skill are explained, as is the usage of points and meridians in the postures.

Training methods are explained, including standing, silk reeling, forms, stepping, single posture training, fajing, qinna, tui shou, equipment training, ball, and stick methods.

There is a chapter on pushing hands, and how it trains the ba fa- the eight energies- of taiji, and the footwork involved.

Weapons training is also covered, although not comprehensively.

The book ends with tales of past masters as passed down in Chenjiagou.

This is a treasure of information. Students of every level will benefit from it. Hats off to Davidine Sim and David Gaffney for this wonderful effort.
