Chen Taijiquan Lao Jia Yi Lu Applications

by Ren Guang Yi

It is said that for each posture in a Chen style form, there are multiple applications, and that there are multiple levels of applications: striking, evading, grasping and controlling, throwing, etc.

Therefore, any attempt to depict all possible applications for postures contained in a form would have to be exhaustively long,

Given the limitations of a single videotape, Ren Guang Yi's video opts to give an overview of the basic applications of the postures of the Lao Jia Yi Lu form.

Therefore, many of the applications are simple "block/evade/redirect and counter" responses to attack.

These are valid and useful for actual defense situations. Several applications shown involve the use of Qinna and throwing.

This tape is a good introduction to application of postures. More advanced practitioners may be dissapointed with the simplicity of the techniques shown. It should be remembered that an exhaustive catalog of applications for this single form could fill a series of videos or DVDs. Ren Guang Yi is releasing a companion video of striking methods and applications soon. Let's hope it is but the second in a continuing series.
