Pushing hands is the term given to a number of two person training routines. These routines use the techniques of peng, lu, ji, an, cai, lieh, jou, and kou, as well as those of teng, shan, zhe and kong.

They serve as a link between training in form to combat use of applications. In push hands, the skills of graspng, throwing, and wrestling are used, making Chen style push hands much more vigorous than that practiced in other styles.

They develop the practitioner’s ability to discern his opponents’ balance and intent by tactile sensation.

There are five levels of push hands practice.
-Huang hua (stationary- both single and double handed exercises)
-Ding bu (stationary- two handed)
-Hua bu (single step - two handed)
-Da lu (moving, low stance- two handed)
-Huang jiao bu (free form- two handed)
